Day 19 – Orange Beach, AL to Bayou La Batre, AL

I have changed my destination for the next two days to Pascagoula, MS and Gulfport, MS. Yesterday’s change to Orange Beach, AL was because there was no room at the station in Gulf Shores, AL. These changes are because after being hosted 11 days out of the 19 days so far by Fire/EMS Stations, I am changing to more populated destinations. Many of the ACA destinations, and the Google Maps destinations, are/were so small that they can not even support a volunteer fire department.

Aside from “100 Days for the Corps” I want to add “Fire Stations Across America” as a sub theme. By including more populated destinations that can support staffed fire stations, it also increases the fund raising and media opportunities. At these next two destinations, I will also be hosted by Fire Stations. I will be making more destination changes in the days to come.

Got an early start today, left the Orange Beach station around 7:15 am to make sure I made it to the Fort Morgan Ferry boarding, 29 miles away, by 10:15 am. After arriving with time to spare, we had to wait since the ferry was about a half hour late. When it arrived we were informed that due to mechanical problems they were not taking anyone to Dauphin Island. It helped that one of the officers on the ferry had seen me on TV the night before and they allowed me to get on board so it only resulted in about a one hour delay overall. I still had 20 more miles to go to the fire station in Bayou La Batre, making this day the longest so far at 49 miles, not counting the ferry boat miles.

Here are some pictures from the ferry boat ride, including a family of pedestrians that never got off the ferry and rode in back to the island, a couple of crew members from the Bayou La Batre station and a plaque from their newest fire truck.

Good move, you’ll miss the Mississippi hills and 3-4 thousand feet of climbing the same damn hill OVER and OVER again. Careful with the traffic…it be Spring Break. You never mentioned our beautiful Alabama beaches?

Never got to the beaches, just saw the gulf water from the road.
