Day 34 – DeRidder, LA to Newton, TX

Finally in Texas, the pictures below are dedicated to Pat Varley from the Walker, LA Fire Department. Hi Pat!

Had some headwinds today but not as bad as on Monday. Roads better in Texas with wide and smooth shoulders.

Arrived in Newton without a host arranged since I had not been able to contact the Fire Chief I had information for, found out he was no longer the Chief but his son was. Same name but different phone and email contacts. Got to meet the new Chief through the owner of the restaurant I stopped in for lunch. Chief Herb Kelley put me up at the Whispering Creek Motel & RV Park about 3 miles east of downtown on Hwy 190 since the Volunteer Fire Department building was being repaired.

Had a nice dinner with the owners of the motel and some of their friends then did an interview with Janice McMahon of the Newton County News who had been notified I was there by the owner Carol.

Updating the Route page to be good through El Paso.

Thanks John, looks like you are doing quite a bit of riding yourself.
