Day 55 – Fort Stockton, TX to Pecos, TX

Today was a much easier ride, mostly flat or slight downhill most of the way, allowing a faster average speed of 12.4 mph over 53 miles. The picture below will give you an idea of the type of terrain Bill Nolan and I covered today, lots of open space.

The previous days riding with Bill, with lots of climbing, he has been in front, today I was in front and stopped at the 10 mile points to take short rest and fluid breaks. He has been carrying my backpack to increase his load for training purposes. Next Sunday he is doing a Century Ride, 100 miles, in Santa Fe, NM at over 7000 feet altitude. When he rides without the backpack and the rest of the gear he is carrying it will make it seem much easier for him.

Tomorrow will be an even shorter ride to Balmorhea, around 40 miles with the first half mostly flat and the second half a gentle climb of about 500 feet over 20 miles. That’s about how much we dropped today from Fort Stockton to Pecos.
