Day 60 – Fabens, TX to El Paso, TX

Left Fabens around 7:30 am and stopped at a Whataburger in Socorro, TX for breakfast about an hour later where I met the Mayor of Socorro, Trini Lopez. He told me a bit about the history and about the Mission of Socorro originally founded in 1682. He called a couple of reporters to do a story on me but could not reach them.

There was a bit of wind today but fortunately it was to my back and made the ride much easier. There were a lot of traffic signals on the road leading into El Paso and then I overshot my destination by about a mile but still got to the station just past 11 am. The reporter from the Fort Bliss Army Base newspaper The Monitor, Sgt. Sinthia Rosario, was waiting for me. She was soon joined by other reporters and photographers from various other news media: KFOX-FOX, KVIA-ABC, KTSM-NBC, El Paso Times, and El Diario. The last interview ended a bit after 4 pm.

I then finally got around to taking a shower and later having a good dinner with the fire station crew. This is the largest fire station I have stayed in so far and it is only one of more than 30 stations in the district. Tomorrow’s destination, the fire station in Vinton near Anthony, TX is still in the El Paso district.

60% of the days and 51.26% of the Semper Fi Fund goal reached!!! Need many more donors, only 59 donors so far.
