Day 70 – Safford, AZ to Peridot, AZ

Day 70 was a long day. What started out as an easy 20 mile day turned out to be a 60+ mile day. I got to Fort Thomas and stopped at the only store there, Keen’s Fort Thomas Store, owned by Sharon Keen. Sharon tried to help me set up a connection for being hosted by giving me names and numbers of some possible hosts. I stayed at the store for a while, had lunch (a hamburger with a beef patty and ham), and did some computer work.

I thought I had made a connection with one of her customers but it fell through later that afternoon around 4 pm after putting on an additional 5 miles. By the time I tried to re-connect it was already almost 5:30 pm and I decided to push on to Bylas about 11 miles further. There was no place to stay there, only a store where I got something to eat. I kept going to Peridot, about 25 miles further down the road where there was also no place to stay. This turned out to be my first night ride, the lights worked very well. At a convenience store near the end of town I met the two ladies pictured below who offered to give me a ride to the nearest hotel in their pickup, it was already after 10 pm and I had gone over 60 miles so I wasn’t about to turn down the offer.

Got to the Apache Gold Hotel/Casino around 10:40 pm and finally got to bed just short of midnight. This morning after a good complementary breakfast I spoke with the hotel manager about getting the room comp’d. I did get tonight comp’d but not last night. I can use a day of rest after the very long day yesterday and it makes up for one of the two stops I jumped over.

Since I am so close to Globe tomorrow I will make it to Superior, then on to Apache Junction on Sunday, and  Chandler on Monday. That will give me two days to just rest and relax before the media events on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
